FAQs

1. Why do dimmers get warm? Is this safe?

During normal operation, dimmers generate heat. The more wattage placed on the dimmer, the warmer it will feel; however, this is perfectly normal and safe. Lutron dimmers are designed to the strictest UL safety standard and can handle their full rated load (a 600W dimmer can handle a full 600W of power*) without overheating.

2. What makes the light dim?

A solid-state dimmer will dim the lights by actually turning them on and off very rapidly—120 times per second. The longer the light is on as opposed to off, the brighter the light output. By the same logic the longer the light is off as opposed to on, the lower the light output.

3. Does dimming affect how long a bulb will last?

Yes. Dimmers reduce power to the bulb, so they can extend bulb life, in addition to saving energy. Incandescent and halogen bulbs last up to 20 times longer when used with a dimmer. LED bulbs that were designed for dimming run cooler when dimmed, which can also extend bulb life.
